The Starter Method
This method is all about becoming your most productive self. To make change is to start and me being the creator of this, I can say it is effective. Maybe you’re reading this because you’ve struggled with starting projects and finishing them. Maybe you found this post because you need an effective way to actually get stuff done. We are human. We all have moments where we procrastinate things even if it’s just a hobby you’re trying to pick up. Whatever it may be, this method works and I am so excited to share this with you guys.
This idea started when I gained a little extra time on my hands. I needed something to fill that time so I wouldn’t resort to watching Netflix when I didn’t have work or anything going on. It was essentially a way that I was able to do a few things toward each hobby every day without feeling overwhelmed.
Let’s create some progress.
Before we start I have two ways you can go about this. I know everyone is different, but either way is going to help you get organized with starting that specific thing you’ve been meaning to get to. Putting efforts towards your passions is one of the most important things.
the first way
Depending on the way your brain works, some people need or like to spend more time on one idea or passion. Maybe you have a schedule to stick to. If that sounds like you then try this way. So let’s start with a week. Pick whichever niche or project you want to start & let me help you break it down to create progress for one week. For example, say you’ve wanted to start your own website. A good first step to anything is to research about it. Take out your planner and on Monday create a to-do list that looks something like this :
Researching about your project
Learning as much as you can and creating notes
Figuring out what your actual first step is going to be
Your progress on Monday is going to help you know where you stand and what needs to come next. After doing your research you probably have a good idea what Tuesday’s to-do list will look like. So on Tuesday you’ll probably have a list that includes :
Looking up what software you want to use for your website and learning which one will suit you best for your niche
Brainstorming the big picture of how your website will look as far as an aesthetic
Making notes of a budget with how much money you’re wanting to spend on a software
The good thing about most website platforms these days is that they offer free trials so you can get comfortable with how the one you chose works before you have to start paying for it. Most aren’t expensive and easy to learn. They probably will give you a step by step tutorial.
Remember this isn’t just for those of you wanting to start a website. This method can be used for anything you’re wanting to start.
The second way
Now that you understand the idea of coming up with a few tasks each day that break down the process it takes in creating something, we’re going to move on to the second way. This way shows you how to incorporate small tasks that work towards your goals. My personal favorite. Like I said before everyone is different and I personally have a lot of different hobbies I’m trying to work on right now. This way is for the people who can handle more things at once. It just might mean you’re good at tackling multiple things or like me, have several hobbies you can work on. Everyone’s timeline is different. Going about it this second way could also be for those of you who have already started something and want to to be consistent with it.
So instead of choosing one hobby to work on over the course of one week, this way you’ll have 2 to 3 projects or ideas in mind to dissect over the week. Let’s talk about this…
How I began creating this strategy was firstly writing out everything I wanted to work on. The best way I can help you understand what I mean is by showing you.
BLOG DAY
Brainstorming/starting new blog
Editing/working on current piece
Research about brands/products
Planning outfits for blog post
MUSIC DAY
Finding/creating more beats
Practicing piano
Write lyrics to unfinished songs
Learning how to engineer
Singing covers
VIDEO/PHOTO DAY
Editing YouTube videos/pictures
Creating content for Pinterest
Filming
ART DAY
Designing sketches/creating vision boards
Studying fashion/learning how to sew
Writing novels
Researching about modeling
MENTAL HEALTH DAY
Journaling prompt (The Journaling Routine that Changed my Life)
Meditation/affirmations
Practicing French language
Read 3-4 chapters of book
Watch a few Ted Talks
As you can see above, there are five different categories for each day of the week. Each day has a title that is specific to the hobby I want to work on for that day. This method just ensures that I’m putting effort towards each different goal for the day. Instead of one hobby or goal over one week, I’ve given one day to each hobby to create a little bit of progress for multiple goals.
So on Monday’s I have my ‘blog day’ where I am brainstorming, editing current pieces that i’m writing or planning outfits. On Tuesday’s I have a ‘music day’ where I’m doing multiple tasks that have to do with creating music like practicing my piano or writing lyrics.
Planning tasks for each day where each day focus’s on something different creates a lot of good progress. It also doesn't make me feel overwhelmed or doesn’t let me get bored doing the same thing every day.
To make it more enjoyable for myself I also add a day called LIGHT DAY. This day is usually on the weekends where I let myself choose three different things I want to work on. Whether it be using my midi to make beats, doing an extra workout or coming up with a new YouTube video. I always make sure I’m using my time productively.
This ‘Starter Method’ leaves me feeling accomplished at the end of every day, and I hope it will help you out too.
